Your Jailbroke iPhone is at Risk

If you jailbreak your iPhone are at risk of malware that will access your data. Here is an article about a malicious attack.

Jailbraking your iPhone is a risky thing to do if you intend to keep personal information on your device.

Aerochive on PC, "Receiving data...." hang

Problem: My Eyes Only, ID Lock or MEO Free "Data set, waiting for response"
- On the iPhone: Data sent, waiting on response
- On the bottom of the Aerochive window: Receiving data....

This is a known issue and a fix is in progress. Workaround: Add another item or dummy item anywhere in the app and try a backup. This will get around the issue. Note: It can happen again, because the problem is due to the size of the data that is being transfered to Aerochive.

If Aerochive is getting stuck on “Waiting for Password Validation” on your iPhone or iPod Touch and Aerochive not showing you a device login screen as it should, then check your firewall settings. Read More...

Can't scroll to Notes fields

A bug was inserted into My Eyes Only version 1.8.2 as we tried to fix a bug related to scrolling in iPhone OS 3.0. This bug prevents a user from scrolling down to the notes field or other fields hidden by the keyboard. We have it fixed and will submit it to Apple this week.

There is a work around
When you want to edit an existing item, don't scroll to the field then hit edit, instead, hit edit and then scroll to the field.  I believe that will get you editing as needed until the new update is out.

Updating your iPhone to OS 3.0

If there is one thing that we recommend you do before you update to OS 3.0 or updating to a new iPhone is make sure you have a valid backup of all your apps and data on your iPhone. Read this to understand how backups work, and read this entry to make sure iTunes is accomplishing the backup.

iPhone App Backup, is it actually backing up?

Software Ops has had a number of customers who have lost all the applications and their application data when they have updated to iPhone OS 3.0. This is very troubling and puzzling to us because iTunes will make an automatic backup of all your apps and their date when you sync. But there seems to be a catch....

Here is a link to the details of how iTunes does app backups: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1766
Everybody should read this in detail.

iPhone OS 3.0 Updates: Update

The new iPhone OS 3.0 included some behavior changes that have exposed bug in My Eyes Only, MEO Free and ID Lock. They are minor issues and Software Ops submitted an update to the App Store on June 4th to address those issues. The new version will be 1.8.2.

Apple is completely swamped with new apps and app updates for iPhone OS 3.0 and Software Ops is waiting its turn to get the apps reviewed and released.

Update: MEO, MEO Free and ID Lock version 1.8.2 have been released by Apple. You can download it now.

Restoring your backup

The backup and restore mechanism is created by Apple and works the same for all iPhone applications. iTunes backs up your data automatically every time you connect your iPhone to your computer. Please note that iTunes will not back up an iPhone that is not configured to sync with that computer.
However there is one problem: If you lose your data (e.g. by removing an application from your iPhone) and connect your iPhone again to your computer, iTunes automatically overwrites the existing backup with a new one. Since you just lost your data on the device, this will effectively delete your previous backup from iTunes! To prevent this, you need to do the following:
  1. Disable automatic syncing for your iPhone in iTunes’ preferences before you connect the iPhone again (iTunes > Preferences > Syncing > Disable automatic syncing for all iPhones and iPods).
  2. Connect your iPhone and wait until it appears in iTunes’ sidebar. Since syncing is disabled, iTunes won’t back up your data automatically.
  3. Click on the Restore button in iTunes and it will take you though the entire Restore process and it will restore the backup of MEO that was last saved during your last sync/backup.
  4. When iTunes asks you to select the device to restore from, make sure you select the proper device and don’t create a new device.

iTunes Keeps a Backup of MEO Data

During the sync process with iTunes, iTunes takes a backup of MEO and all its data. This is true for all other applications and data on your iPhone or iPod Touch. iTunes only keeps the latest data in case it becomes necessary to restore the data back to your device or a different device in yours was lost or stolen.

Also note that Software Ops is working on an archiving desktop application.

MEO just dosn't seem to work correctly? Reboot!

Software Ops has had a number of support emails complaining about totally unrelated problems that I can only describe by paraphrasing; “the UI not working like it should” or “MEO isn’t behaving like I would expect”. I realize my descriptions are not specific, but they do capture the essence of the problems described by customers.

When we get one of these emails and are dumfounded by the problem, we first suggest to the customer they reboot their device by turning in off and then on again. I’m always amazed when I get an email back claiming that fixed the problem. I’m going to stop being amazed and just offer this bit of advice to all who reads this post.

If you are having problems with MEO or your device in general, please reboot and see if the problem still occurs.

Also, I suggest that if you chose to download app updates on your device, please don’t; but if you have to, reboot first.

Data Loss Issues Across the iPhone Community

There are some reviews of MEO that complain about data loss. These reviews are misdirected at My Eyes Only™.

The problem seems to be related to the iPhone OS or the iTunes app update and sync process. I have confirmed with other developers who have data app that on occasion their customers complain of data loss. MEO customers are not immune to this rare problem. In addition, some customers do not fully understand how iTunes works and the complications of syncing with multiple desktops or wrongly initiating full restores of their devices and getting results they were not ready to accept. Getting an Update thru iTunes

It seems that in some cases MEO updates are not showing up for customers either on their device or in iTunes on the desktop. You can still get MEO through iTunes by following these instructions. Note: you will not have to pay again.

To re-download the application to your iPhone, iPod touch, or computer:
  1. Make sure you are signed in with the same account used for the original purchase.
  2. Locate My Eyes Only™ on the App Store and click the "Buy app" button or tap the price on the device.
  3. A dialog will appear: "You have already purchased this item. To download it again for free, select OK." Click OK to continue with the download.
  4. If you didn’t get the dialog, then contact Apple iTunes.

We don’t control the app update process that is managed between iTunes and your iPhone or Touch. If you do have to pay again, and you are using the same account you initially purchased MEO with, then contact Apple iTunes.

Best Practices for Taking an Update of MEO

Be sure to do the following before doing an update to protect against misbehaving iPhone update process.

1) Verify that your information is intact in MEO.
2) Reboot your iPhone.
3) Perform a sync/backup with iTunes.
4) After the sync completes, uncheck the option “Automatically sync when this iPhone[ or iPod] is connected.
5) Perform the download on your iPhone/iPod Touch.
6) After download check the information in MEO. It will likely be there in full, but check all the categories to be sure.
7) If your data isn’t there, unlikely but it does seem to happen to 1 in 15,000 users, then perform a full restore of your iPhone/iPod Touch. Your data will be moved back to your iPhone.
LAST STEP) Check the option “Automatically sync when this iPhone[ or iPod] is connected so future connections will sync and backup.

Upgrading to a new iPhone or iPod Touch

If you are planning to update your iPhone or iPod Touch, then make sure you have version 1.3.8 or newer. When you get the update, make sure you run MEO at least once and then sync/backup with iTunes. This will allow you to use iTunes restore procedure to load all your data from your old device to you new one.

This is another example of our commitment to MEO and the iPhone/iPod Touch platform. We continue to constantly improve MEO and will maintain it long after others have given up on the iPhone platform.

Reset Your Password: In Last Resort

We added the ability to reset your password in 1.2, but it does more that reset the password; it deletes all the existing data! It has to if you think about it.

If somebody finds your lost iPhone or stole you iPhone, do you want them to simply reset your password and then get access to your data? That’s an easy answer.

A Measure of Last Resort

So if you forget your password, you can start over by doing the following. On any screen you see the button “Delete Password and ALL Information” click it. (This screen shot is on the Password Setting screen and you have to scroll the window to get access to it. The need for scrolling is for protection from an accidental touch.)

DeletePasswordScreen

Then you will see this Alert:
AlertDeletePassword

If you chose to “Delete Password and Info” It will do as it says and you will then see this alert:
AlertPasswordDeleted

Finally it will take you to the Welcome screen and have you select a password when you hit Continue.

Lost Passwords and Password Recovery

A new feature in version 1.2 is a means to recover a forgotten password when you enter a password recovery question and answer to that question. The thing to remember about this feature is that it will not help you recover a password prior to version 1.2 because you could not enter a question and answer until 1.2. This also means you need to take the time to enter a question and answer in version 1.2.

To add a password recovery and answer, go to Settings -> Password Settings and click on the button Change Password and Hint. After you enter your existing password you then are asked to select a new password (the old one will work if you like that password), enter a Hint and then enter a recovery question and answer.

Understand that having a question and answer is like having a second password. Also understand that you are giving a person the ability to figure out your password. That is how Sarah Palin’s email account was hacked. The hacker used the build in Yahoo password recovery question and answer with a bit of social engineering to answer her question and then reset her password. Don’t let that happen to you.

Pick a question that only you can answer.

I broke what bone?
Where did I catch my first fish?
Who was the first girl that kissed me? (This was a blast from the past!)

Backup your iTunes App Backup

This article explains how to backup your iTunes application backups with Time Machine on the Mac. You could follow the same procedure to backup your data on a PC.

My Eyes Only doesn't start anymore

I've just purchased My Eyes Only but the application doesn't start on my iPhone/iPod touch.
This appears to be a common bug in the iPhone OS. Restart your iPhone twice by switching it completely off and on again (press and hold the Sleep/Wake button for a few seconds until the red slider appears, then drag the slider...)
If it still doesn't work and you haven't entered any to-dos yet, try re-installing My Eyes Only™.

How do I re-install My Eyes Only™?

Please note that by re-installing the app all your encrypted data will be lost.
  1. Remove My Eyes Only™ from your iTunes Library. All downloaded apps are listed in "Applications".
  2. Remove My Eyes Only™ from your iPhone. Touch and hold the My Eyes Only™ icon on the home screen until the icons start to wiggle. Tap the "x" in the corner of the My Eyes Only™ icon. Tap Delete to remove the application and all of its data from your iPhone. Then press the Home button.
