Solving Problems

Updates are free

It seems that in some cases it appears that customers who want to update MEO are being asked to pay again. We don’t know why this is happening, because MEO updates are free.

We don’t control the app update process that is managed between iTunes and your iPhone or Touch. If you try an update and it seems like you have to pay, then please review the instructions below. If you do have to pay again, and you are using the same account you initially purchased MEO with, then contact Apple iTunes.

To re-download the application to your iPhone, iPod touch, or computer:
  1. Make sure you are signed in with the same account used for the original purchase.
  2. Locate My Eyes Only™ on the App Store and click the "Buy app" button or tap the price on the device.
  3. A dialog will appear: "You have already purchased this item. To download it again for free, select OK." Click OK to continue with the download.
  4. If you didn’t get the dialog, then contact Apple iTunes.

Software build problem with Version 1.3

We took or latest version, 1.3, off iTunes due to what appears to be a software build issue. We are engaging Apple to help us trouble shoot this issue. A New build will be out as soon as possible.

Update

I have had to remove MEO from sale on iTunes, because I unknowing signed the 1.3 version of MEO with a different distribution certificate.  That version can’t retrieve any Key Chain information, including the encryption key used to decrypt the data. Anybody who downloaded that version, only a hand full, have "lost" their data, in the sense that newly generated encryption keys can’t decrypt the old data.

The next version will fix this issue.

It may be the case that the next version will again start showing the “lost” data. I’m not sure what will happen with any new data.

Update If you want to understand what happened, here is the link to a blog entry that explains the details.

Reset Your Password: In Last Resort

We added the ability to reset your password in 1.2, but it does more that reset the password; it deletes all the existing data! It has to if you think about it.

If somebody finds your lost iPhone or stole you iPhone, do you want them to simply reset your password and then get access to your data? That’s an easy answer.

A Measure of Last Resort

So if you forget your password, you can start over by doing the following. On any screen you see the button “Delete Password and ALL Information” click it. (This screen shot is on the Password Setting screen and you have to scroll the window to get access to it. The need for scrolling is for protection from an accidental touch.)

DeletePasswordScreen

Then you will see this Alert:
AlertDeletePassword

If you chose to “Delete Password and Info” It will do as it says and you will then see this alert:
AlertPasswordDeleted

Finally it will take you to the Welcome screen and have you select a password when you hit Continue.

Lost Passwords and Password Recovery

A new feature in version 1.2 is a means to recover a forgotten password when you enter a password recovery question and answer to that question. The thing to remember about this feature is that it will not help you recover a password prior to version 1.2 because you could not enter a question and answer until 1.2. This also means you need to take the time to enter a question and answer in version 1.2.

To add a password recovery and answer, go to Settings -> Password Settings and click on the button Change Password and Hint. After you enter your existing password you then are asked to select a new password (the old one will work if you like that password), enter a Hint and then enter a recovery question and answer.

Understand that having a question and answer is like having a second password. Also understand that you are giving a person the ability to figure out your password. That is how Sarah Palin’s email account was hacked. The hacker used the build in Yahoo password recovery question and answer with a bit of social engineering to answer her question and then reset her password. Don’t let that happen to you.

Pick a question that only you can answer.

I broke what bone?
Where did I catch my first fish?
Who was the first girl that kissed me? (This was a blast from the past!)

How to Restore from iTunes Backup

When your device is attached, right click on the device and you will see the following options. Select “Restore from Backup...” and all the data backed up onto your iPhone will be restored from the last time it was synced/backed-up.

See our support page “How do backups work?” section for more details.

The iPhone (iPod Touch) 2.1 update is as good as everybody is saying. Don’t hesitate.

Future updates of MEO will require 2.1.

Backup your iTunes App Backup

This article explains how to backup your iTunes application backups with Time Machine on the Mac. You could follow the same procedure to backup your data on a PC.

How do backups work?

The backup and restore mechanism is created by Apple and works the same for all iPhone applications. iTunes backs up your data automatically every time you connect your iPhone to your computer. Please note that iTunes will not back up an iPhone that is not configured to sync with that computer.
However there is one problem: If you lose your data (e.g. by removing an application from your iPhone) and connect your iPhone again to your computer, iTunes automatically overwrites the existing backup with a new one. Since you just lost your data on the device, this will effectively delete your previous backup from iTunes! To prevent this, you need to do the following:
  1. Disable automatic syncing for your iPhone in iTunes’ preferences before you connect the iPhone again (iTunes > Preferences > Syncing > Disable automatic syncing for all iPhones and iPods).
  2. Connect your iPhone and wait until it appears in iTunes’ sidebar. Since syncing is disabled, iTunes won’t back up your data automatically.
  3. Right-click (or control click) on the iPhone and select “Restore from backup”.

Updating safely

Users of many other iPhone applications have reported data loss problems after installing updates, and sadly, My Eyes Only™ is no exception. This is not a fault on our side, but rather a strange bug in iTunes/iPhone OS. From our customer support issue logs, we have seen just two users who have lost date during the update. As far as we know, no one has yet been able to reliably reproduce this bug, so we don’t know how long it will take Apple to fix it.
There is a procedure you can follow to prevent data losses until Apple has resolved the issue. Note that this procedure works equally well for all iPhone applications, not just My Eyes Only™.
  1. Back up your iPhone by syncing it with iTunes just before you install any update.
  2. Disconnect your iPhone and install the update on the device.
  3. If you didn’t lose your data, all is fine. If you did lose your data, you can restore it from the backup. But you have to be very careful. When you connect your iPhone to your computer, iTunes automatically overwrites the existing backup with a new one.

Restoring your backup

When your device is attached, right click on the device and you will see the following options. Select “Restore from Backup...” and all the data backed up onto your iPhone will be restored from the last time it was synced/backed-up.

If that doesn't work than a complete restore might restore the data. Select your device in iTunes....

and then do a Restore.

My Eyes Only doesn't start anymore

I've just purchased My Eyes Only but the application doesn't start on my iPhone/iPod touch.
This appears to be a common bug in the iPhone OS. Restart your iPhone twice by switching it completely off and on again (press and hold the Sleep/Wake button for a few seconds until the red slider appears, then drag the slider...)
If it still doesn't work and you haven't entered any to-dos yet, try re-installing My Eyes Only™.

How do I re-install My Eyes Only™?

Please note that by re-installing the app all your encrypted data will be lost.
  1. Remove My Eyes Only™ from your iTunes Library. All downloaded apps are listed in "Applications".
  2. Remove My Eyes Only™ from your iPhone. Touch and hold the My Eyes Only™ icon on the home screen until the icons start to wiggle. Tap the "x" in the corner of the My Eyes Only™ icon. Tap Delete to remove the application and all of its data from your iPhone. Then press the Home button.
